About The Founder
Due to the demand for culturally responsive solutions, Derek Collins created a culturally specific organization to provide responsive learning solutions, critical supplies, and family engagement programs that resonate with underserved and at-risk youth and families.
How Gifted & Lit Was Born
Around 2008, the influence of Hip-Hop on the children and adults in Derek’s orbit became impossible to ignore: grown men rapping to themselves as they walked down the street, children easily memorizing songs with catchy hooks and beats. He thought, “If I could create a program that included education, positivity, and catchy beats, the community would flock to it.” Unable to shake this idea, he decided to test the concept. As a substitute teacher for the Dekalb County School District, he played the program School House Rock for some kindergarteners…and they loved it. If this music and animation from the 1970s and 80s was still resonating in 2008, he knew that he could create something even better and more relevant. But he was barely scraping by at the time and couldn’t imagine financing such a project.
How Gifted & Lit Was Born Pt 2
He told himself, “As soon as I get some money, I’m going to make this happen.”
Derek loved teaching, but it wasn’t paying enough, so he became credentialed as a drug and alcohol counselor. In 2012, he opened a private practice, Diversion Center, that works with court– mandated clients, helping give them a second chance after a brush with the law. Collins himself had been given a second chance after his own legal trouble through a similar program, so he is able to meet his clients with empathy and compassion. However, through this work, Derek continued to see the negative impacts of Hip-Hop on adults. His observations fueled his drive to make Gifted & Lit a reality.
How Gifted & Lit Was Born Pt 3
In 2017, nine years after first dreaming it, he launched Gifted & Lit with the goal of finally using Hip-Hop and culturally relevant teaching to enrich and uplift his community. Despite the challenges of bootstrapping the program, over 10,000 families have purchased Gifted & Lit programming. After seeing how effective and popular the program is, in 2022, he decided to create a nonprofit branch to help reach those who couldn’t afford it otherwise. He hopes to see Gifted & Lit in 100,000 homes in the next year, and aspires to have it in 1 million households in the next five years. Additionally, the organization aspires to provide mentorship to teenagers to improve their personal and professional development.
